We want to remind families that next week is a very short week, with no school on Thursday, Friday, or the following Monday.  Our teachers and support staff will spend Thursday and Friday in professional learning sessions at the annual convention and then spend Monday with their loved ones for Family Day.

Follow us on Instagram @BelfastSchoolcbe.

If you do not see your child on Instagram and would like to, please complete the annual authorization form on MyCBE.

Elev8 Lacrosse – Surprise FREE Residency!

Our amazing friends at Elev8 Lacrosse called us and asked us if we wanted a free last-minute two-day residency, so of course we said YES! Next Monday and Tuesday, all classes will learn and play lacrosse with some amazing instructors.  Thank you to our friends at Elev8 for thinking of us!

Red & Pink Day & Candy Bags

On Wednesday next week, Leadership Club is hosting the next spirit day, with a “Red and Pink Day” in honour of Valentine’s Day.  That day, Leadership students will also be selling candy bags for $2, with all proceeds going to our charity, Parachutes for Pets.  The candy is Halal-friendly and nut-free.  Students will purchase it directly from the Leadership students, and should not bring in money before Wednesday.

Increasing Food Requests

Our school has emergency food for students who may have forgotten a lunch, or may just be extra hungry one day and need a little bit more.  We are seeing a significant increase in the number of requests for emergency food from students.  If food security is a concern at your home, please reach out to the school office and we can get regular lunch support for your child(ren).  If food security is not a concern, please talk to your child about whether they have enough food for snack and lunch each day, and adjust if necessary.  We want to ensure our food goes to those who need it, and not just those who don’t like what their parents packed for that day!

Wizard of Oz Community Auditions for Youth Theatre Canada

Auditions for our spring performance of OZ took place this week, and the students did an incredible job!  The spring performance this year will be fantastic!

Coincidentally, Youth Theatre Canada is currently auditioning for their Wizard of Oz production and invite students in Grade 5 and 6 to audition if they are interested.  It is important to note that this is not a CBE sponsored event, but it may be worth checking out for our budding performers!  Check out more information here

Alberta Education and Childcare (AECA) Survey for Parents

Parents of students in Grades 4-6 should have received a survey from Alberta Education.  The results of this survey are shared with the school and help us make decisions and improve learning experiences for our students.  We ask that all parents who received this survey complete it as soon as possible.  Thank you!

Reminder - Blanket Exercise:  February 26, 6:00 PM (Rescheduled from October)

Ms. Lundgren will be leading a Blanket Exercise for any interested adults who want to attend.  The Blanket Exercise is used to “build understanding about our shared history as Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada by walking through pre-contact, treaty-making, colonization and resistance. Everyone is actively involved as they step onto blankets that represent the land, and into the role of First Nations, Inuit and later Métis peoples. By engaging on an emotional and intellectual level, the Blanket Exercise effectively educates and increases empathy” (Kairos).

It is the story of Canada that many adults did not learn in school, and covers topics like the Indian Act, Residential Schools, and the Sixties Scoop.  The exercise is interactive, and as it covers heavy topics, there will be a circle and optional smudge to end the evening in a good way.

If you have any questions, you can read more about what to expect here.

An RSVP is required to prepare, so please email me at mllundgren@cbe.ab.ca if you can make it or want to know more.
