One of the most important ways parents/guardians and community members can make a meaningful difference for students is by participating on the school council. Under the Education Act, a school council is a collective association designed to advise the principal and the CBE Board of Trustees on matters related to the school. School councils have legislated advisory and decision-making authority defined within the Education Act and the School Councils Regulation. They are different from Parent Societies & Associations, whose main function is to raise funds for the school. You can find more details in the CBE School Council Handbook.

About Our School Council
Our School Council believes that the parents of all students at Belfast School have a vital role to play in their children's education. Our goal is to work in partnership with school administration, staff, parents, students and community organizations to provide a healthy, safe and supportive environment that allows each student to receive the best possible education.
Meeting Dates | Schedule
Meetings take place monthly on Tuesdays evenings starting at 6:30 PM . We will alternate between in person and virtual meetings. To join online, a Microsoft Teams link will be e-mailed to parents before the meeting.

Council Position Summaries
School Chair – The school chair role consists of attending all meetings. Building an agenda for discussion during the meetings. To initiate voting on items such as monies out of the bank accounts for certain items on the school’s wish list. In this position you must be available to invest a lot of time in going to all the meetings including being the council representative at the Fundraising meetings.
Vice Chair
Assists the School Chair with all meetings and engage with the parents that attend the meetings. Sub in when the Chair is not
present. In this position you must be available to invest at least an hour and half to attend the monthly meetings.
Secretary
Acts as a recorder for all meetings including fundraising meetings. You would also keep minutes, correspondence and records that would be accessible to the parent council. You must also have knowledge of the school council bylaws/operating procedures.
Treasurer
The treasurer keeps financial transactions of the school council, reports to the school council and complies with the school council and the Calgary Board of Education policies. 
Some typical duties include:
- keeping accurate records of all financial transactions;
 - reporting to school council on the receipt and expenditure of funds;
 - ensuring records are available upon the request of the school district
 
Kindergarten Representative
The Kindergarten Representative ensures that the voices of the kindergarten community are shared at school council meetings.
