Belfast Parent Update | November 17

Important Dates

Today – Conference bookings open at 4:00

November 16 – 23 – Alien In-line skating

Tuesday, November 28 – School Council

 Dear Belfast Families,

It was a short, but busy week here at Belfast School. The highlight after any break from school is hearing all about the students’ many adventures while they were away: we heard positive stories (warm vacations!), funny stories (sleepover antics!), and wild stories (broken bones!). Students came back with new haircuts, new braces, new glasses – we missed a lot in that week!

It has been wonderful seeing our students try in-line skating this week. Our students have been excited – and also a bit intimidated – to try it, but after just 30 minutes, they are all skating around the gym! We are so grateful for enhancement opportunities like this that our School Council approves and our Parent Fundraising Society finances. Thank you so much to everyone who attends those meetings and who donates to our school.

We encourage all our families to follow our school’s Instagram account (@BelfastSchoolcbe) and visit our school website to see pictures from the week.

Belfast Parent Fundraising Society’s New Fundraiser off to a Great Start!

The Belfast Parent Fundraising Society is trying something new!  In an effort to maximize the impact of our fundraising initiatives and make it more convenient for everyone, we have decided to focus on one major fundraiser for this school year. Click HERE  for more information. Your support is valuable and appreciated.  Please note that this fundraiser replaces smaller fundraisers throughout the year.  As of today, we have raised almost $3000!  Thank you so much to everyone who donated!

School Conferences – Book Today on myCBE

We will be having in-person student/parent/teacher conferences on Thursday, November 23 from 4:00-8:00 and Friday, November 24 from 8:30-12:00.  Bookings will open today at 4:00 PM and close on Wednesday, November 22.  Please note that LEAD classes will have modified conference schedules due to interpreter availability.

To book, you need a myCBE account.  A myCBE account is critical for parent communication with the school: you will need this account to check your child’s grades, see their attendance, view their report card, pay school fees, and book any future conferences.  You only need to create an account once, and it will carry over year after year.  To create an account or to book your conferences, visit the myCBE page here

Check your Child’s Grades Online!

In an effort to ensure families are kept up-to-date with student progress, our teachers are updating grades online.  Parents can log onto myCBE to see their child’s assessment at any time.  Please see this short video to learn how to view your child’s grades. If you would prefer a step by step written guide, you can access that here.here. We encourage all of our families to log in regularly to see how your child is doing, and to reach out to the teacher if you have any questions or concerns.

The Giving Tree – Belfast Families Helping Belfast Families

Each year, the Belfast School community supports some of our families at Christmas. This year, we will set up our Giving Tree on November 22. Belfast families can take a gift card suggestion off the tree and purchase gift cards to anonymously give to other families in need. We will be accepting gift cards in the office (please attach a receipt that has the activation information on it) for any store in any denomination from November 22 to December 15. On December 15, we will distribute the gift cards to families.

If you would like your family to be considered for the Giving Tree, or would like to bring forward another family to receive the Giving Tree gift cards, please contact the school office. All family information will be kept confidential.

Save the Date: Winter Concert December 14

All students will be performing at our Winter Concert on Thursday, December 14. We will have two shows: one at 1:30 PM and one at 6:30 PM. Due to space constraints, we ask that only immediate family come to the evening performance; grandparents and other extended family members are encouraged to come to the afternoon performance. We will be collecting cash donations for the Calgary Food Bank at both performances.

Belfast Community Dates

  • November 12 was Diwali. Diwali is also known as the festival of lights, and it originated in India.  The festival is named from the row of clay lamps that are lit outside homes to symbolize the inner light that protects from spiritual darkness.
  • November 20-24 is Bullying Awareness Week and is a time to promote awareness and understanding of bullying and its impacts.
  • November 20 is the 30th anniversary of National Child Day in Canada. It is a day to honour our country’s commitment to upholding the rights of children.
  • November 20 is Transgender Day of Remembrance, a day that honors the memory of the transgender people whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence.
  • November 20-26 is Canada History Week. This year's theme is the History of Black Achievement in Canada. This week encourages Canadians to reflect upon and engage with Canada's past.

Reminder:  Alien In-line Skating all Next Week

The students have loved trying in-line skating!  Thank you so much to our volunteers who are helping the students get into their helmets, pads, and skates – we couldn’t do it without you!  Your child is encouraged to bring their own helmet, knee/elbow pads, and/or rollerblades if they have them – this would greatly speed up the process.  Thank you to the Belfast School Council & Belfast Parent Fundraising Society for this great opportunity!

As always, please do not hesitate to reach out if you have anything you would like to share.

Have a wonderful weekend,
