Dear Belfast Families,

Halloween on a Tuesday makes for a VERY busy week at school, but we made it! 😊 I realize that Halloween looked a little different this year without the parent parade. We discussed what Halloween would look like as a staff and chose to switch things up. We had the students in their community groups this year, and they stayed with those groups as they visited other communities for the parade. I appreciate the feedback I’ve received and I will take that information back to the staff.

We encourage all our families to follow our school’s Instagram account (@BelfastSchoolcbe) and visit our school website to see pictures from the week.

Belfast Shirts are Coming Home Monday!

Last year, our school went through a logo redesign process and we absolutely LOVE how our new logo truly captures the Belfast School community. We are so pleased to have our new logo on t-shirts to gift to all students and staff! Thank you so much to our School Council for approving the purchase and to our Parent Fundraising Society for funding this community-building initiative.

Grade 1-6 students will wear their brand new shirts to Telus Spark on Monday and will bring them home after. Kindergarten students are not going to Spark on Monday, but will bring their shirts home that day as well. We ask that you wash the shirt in cold water, inside out, to preserve the life of the logo.

We can’t wait to have all of our students and staff show their Belfast pride in their new logo t-shirts!

Daylight Savings this Weekend

This Sunday, at 2:00 AM, we turn our clocks back one hour for Daylight Savings Time. For many of our new families, this will be the first time they have experienced Daylight Savings Time, as only about one third of the world participates in this twice-annual event. If you are interested in learning more about Daylight Savings, please see this short video from National Geographic Education that explains where people do this and why it takes place.

Fall Break is Coming up!

For the first time, the CBE is having a Fall Break, from November 10-14. Schools will be closed during this time. Please remember that November 9 is a PD Day as well, so there is no school for students that day. All CBE staff will be engaged in Indigenous learning that day.

Date Correction for Fun Lunch:  Coco Brooks is November 16

Our next Fun Lunch will be on Thursday, November 16 (I had the wrong date last week – sorry!) and will be Coco Brooks pizza.  You can order your child’s lunch on the Healthy Hunger website here.  If you would like your child to participate, but are worried about the cost of participating due to financial concerns, please contact Clancy at cleevans@cbe.ab.ca or call the school.   Please note that Coco Brooks does provide a gluten-free option as well.  Thank you to Alisha, our parent coordinator, for organizing these lunches!

From our School Nurse

Our school nurse, Stephanie, shares health information each month that parents might find interesting.  This month, she is focusing on creating healthy relationships with food, and what parents can do to support this at home.  If you would like to read more about this, please look at the AHS Healthier Together article here.

More than a Ticket: Kids up Front Opportunity

Kids Up Front offers Calgary students and their families various opportunities to attend sports games, concerts and other events through the More Than A Ticket program. This program supports students and families, who may not have access to ticketed events, enjoy exciting concerts, performances and sports games throughout the year.

While CBE is not a ticket agent and schools will not distribute tickets directly to students or families, families can see the KUF agency partners who do distribute tickets.

Indigenous Veteran’s Day & Remembrance Day

Our Remembrance Day Assembly will be Wednesday, November 8 at 10:30.  This day is also Indigenous Veteran’s Day, and the contributions and sacrifices of First Nations, Metis, and Inuit veterans will be included in our assembly. All classes will have a part in the assembly.  Family members are invited to attend the assembly as a way to celebrate peace and honour those who sacrificed for the peace that we have today.

For more information about the history and contributions of the Indigenous men and women in service to Canada, the CBE recommends Indigenous Soldiers - Foreign Battlefields and CBC Unreserved:  Remembering the Contributions of Indigenous Veterans as a starting point.

Reminder:  Monday Grades 1-6 are at Telus Spark

Thank you to School Council and our Parent Fundraising Society for the opportunity to continue our partnership with Telus Spark.  All of our Grade 1-6 students will be heading to Spark on Monday, November 6.  We will leave the school at 9:00 and return at 2:00.  We require one parent volunteer to attend with each class.  If you have your security clearance completed and are able to volunteer, please contact your child’s teacher.

Reminder:  Volunteers Needed for Alien Inline Skating

Our Parent Fundraising Society has funded an amazing opportunity for all of our students at Belfast: Alien Inline skating lessons. All students will receive three sessions of inline skating during the residency from November 15-23.

To ensure the students get the most possible time on their skates, we require parent volunteers to help get kids in and out of their skates, pads, and helmets.  If you are able to volunteer at all during these days, and have a current approved police check, please contact Clancy at cleevans@cbe.ab.ca.  Thank you!

As always, please do not hesitate to reach out if you have anything you would like to share.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Meagan Lundgren
