Dear Belfast Families,
We had just under 50% of our students attend school today, and it is not really a surprise with this extremely cold weather. The cold weather brings many logistical challenges with it, and we know how hard it can be for many of our families to get to school. We are thankful for those who were able to attend this week. Next week looks better, but will still be cold, so chances are we will be spending most of our lunches inside. We are very fortunate to have a strong lunchroom team at Belfast who really worked hard this week making the indoor lunch recesses fun for students. I know they have more ideas ready for next week!
We encourage all our families to follow our school’s Instagram account (@BelfastSchoolcbe) and visit our school website to see pictures from the week.
PD Day Monday – No School
Just a reminder that Monday is a PD Day. Staff will be working on report cards and will also be developing physical education resources with Ever Active Schools.
Staffing Updates – Ms. Evans & Ms. Teasdale & Ms. Hutchison
Ms. Evans is happy to have received a date for a surgery that she has been waiting a long time for, so she will be off beginning January 19, and will return on March 1. Ms. Gina Davidoff, a retired AP, will be Acting AP during Clancy’s leave. We would like to wish Clancy a fast recovery and we welcome Ms. Davidoff to Belfast.
Ms. Teasdale’s leave has been extended and Ms. Shauna Williams will be teaching our Grade 6 class until mid-February. We would like to thank Ms. Sophia Burgess for covering the first part of the leave and wish her the best as she begins her Australian adventure!
Congratulations to Ms. Hutchison who completed her Masters degree this past week! It is not easy being both a student and a teacher and so we want to celebrate this significant accomplishment! Congraluations, Charis! We are all so proud of you!
Cold Weather Reminders
We would like to remind families of our “Blue Day” policy when the temperature is –21 or colder with the windchill:
- Indoor recess, except for “Polar Bear Club” students (within reason for Polar Bear Club)
 - Doors will open at 8:20. Come in the door closest to your arrival location
 - Please do not arrive before 8:20
 - Students need warm mittens, a toque, snowpants, a warm jacket, and winter boots

- If you need help with any winter clothing, please let the school know and we can help!

Kindergarten Open House is Next Week!
We are hosting our Open House on Wednesday, January 17 from 6:30-7:30 for all incoming kindergarten students and their families. Please pass on this information to families in the community that you know. We are excited to welcome many Belfast siblings to our school as well. See you there!
Reminder: Kindergarten registrations open January 15 online through MyCBE/School Engage.
Healthy Hunger Fun Lunches
Thanks to our parent coordinator, Alisha, all Fun Lunches for the rest of the year have been posted. We will have:
- Jan 24 - Subway (due by Jan 19)
 - Feb 14 - Coco Brooks (due by Feb 9)
 - Mar 13 - Mucho Burrito (due by March 8)
 - April 17 - Subway (due by April 12)
 - May 15 - Coco Brooks (Due by May 10)
 - June 12 - Mucho Burrito (due by June 7)

Fun Lunches save the parents from packing a lunch and also raise about $200 per lunch for the school. Fun Lunches are a great way to give yourself a break while also supporting the school!
Skiing Next Week for LEAD and Grade 5/6
Our Grade 5, 6, and LEAD classes will be skiing on Wednesday next week. At this time, the weather looks okay, but we will keep a close eye on it and keep families updated. Thank you to School Council and the Parent Fundraising Society for subsidizing some of this field trip!
Winter Festival at Crossroads Community Association
Our neighbors, the Crossroads Community Association, are hosting their Winter FESTival on Saurday, February 3. For more information about this family friendly event, please see the flyer here
Reminder: Free Eye Exams for Everyone at School – Forms Due!
Our school is very fortunate to have been selected by Nation’s Vision, which will provide a free eye exam during school hours to all students. Not only does Nation’s Vision screen all of our students, but they help secure eyeglasses to students who need them at significantly reduced rates based on what families can afford.
The clinic will take place during school hours in February. Forms are due back on Monday, January 22.
As always, please do not hesitate to reach out if you have anything you would like to share.
Have a great weekend,
Meagan Lundgren
Principal
