Dear Belfast Families,
After a year of working with Calgary Opera on our “Battle for Belfast”, we were thrilled to finally share the production with our families. We were blown away by the turnout at both the matinee and evening performances. It means so much to all of the students to have a special person or persons – in the audience.
Thank you for showing up for your children.
We would like to thank some key people who made the
“Let’s Create an Opera” happen:
Calgary Opera talents:
David Sklar (librettist), Arthur Bachman (composer), Claire Bolton (director), Stephanie Kallay (Associate Director of Development), Patricia Kesler (Education Manager), and Brett Johnson (theatre technician)
Lyudmyla Heath, our amazing accompanist
Kristina P, our hardworking parent volunteer who made many of the props and costumes
Lynne Ursenbach, who painted the sets and supervised student artists
Dean Evans & Kelly Lundgren, who helped construct the sets
Amanda, Lois, and Caitlyn for helping get kinders into costume
Our student tech crew: Sarah, Summer, Rudy, Owen, Cole, Ahmed, and Nora
Ms. Evans, who brought this incredible opportunity to our school and who did so much behind the scenes; her expertise during the opera process was invaluable!
Mr. Ursenbach, who was the key person behind the success of the opera, ensuring all 200+ students knew their roles inside and out; this was a massive undertaking and Mr. U was our steadfast leader throughout the entire year-long process
All of our teachers and support staff who were flexible and helped out with the Opera
Kiko, G Leen, Clara, and Sam who were our main leads and held the opera together with their commitment and talent
All of our amazing Belfast students who generated plot ideas, experimented with scores, memorized lines, practiced their moves, and confidently performed on stage in front of hundreds of people.
We are so proud of all of our students!
We encourage all our families to follow our school’s Instagram account (@BelfastSchoolcbe) and visit our school website to see pictures from the week.
Energy Drinks & Kids
We would like to remind families that energy drinks are not allowed at school. Alberta Health Services strongly warns against children and teens consuming energy drinks. The main ingredient in energy drinks is caffeine. Caffeine can cause:
Higher blood pressure
Sleep issues
Abnormal heartbeats
Increased blood sugar
Please visit this site for more information about the risks associated with energy drinks.
Reminder:  Field Trip Fees are
Due
We are very fortunate to have had many field trips over the past month, and have many more coming up next month.  Please remember to pay your fees online through myCBE.  You are able to make partial payments if the
cost of the entire trip is not within your current budget.  We are very thankful to the Belfast Parent Fundraising Society for generously subsidizing our trips this year.
Reminder:  You’re Invited to
Run!
On Thursday, June 13, we will be hosting our second annual Ever Active Schools Fun Run. Last year, we had to move inside due to the smoke, but we are hoping for clear skies this year.
We would love for families to join us in our run. If you’d like to run, or just cheer on our runners, please be on the back field for 1:30. Our students will meet you out there after they attend a short assembly.
Thank you to Ms. Tuck and her Run Club for bringing this awesome event back to Belfast! Thank you also to Ms. Jenn from Ever Active Schools for supporting our school with these initiatives.
Reminder:  You’re Invited to
Celebrate!
On Thursday, June 20, we will host Tony Tootoosis and his family for the second year in a row to celebrate National Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
Beginning at 1:30 on the back field, we will listen to Tony share his stories and his pride about his culture. After Tony’s speech, we will be gifted a learning experience about Indigenous culture, history, and spirituality as we watch Tony and his family dance, including chicken, grass, and jingle traditional dances. We will end the morning with a community round dance. We invite all of our families to attend this special afternoon, and hope our kindergarten students can attend with their families as well!
As always, please do not hesitate to reach out if you
have anything you would like to share.
Have a wonderful weekend,
Meagan Lundgren
Principal
